The modular photovoltaic (PV) solar technology is used to generate sustainable and green energy using sunlight. According to researchers, industry and customers would benefit from more effective solar power plants.

“Solar is currently the cheapest form of electricity in the world, but the efficiency of the actual power plants is assessed one by one and is simply incomprehensible, especially for a fast-growing industry,” said Roger French, director of the research center for solar durability and expansion, Kyocera, professor of ceramics , Department of Materials. “This project will help us learn how to improve the efficiency of solar energy.”

The work was funded by a 3-year grant of $ 750,000. DOE, comprised of a large solar technology program proposed by the DOE in 2020, was $ 7.3 million, primarily for motor learning and other solar powered AI solutions. The Department of Energy is part of the DOE.

The project is currently being led by the French professor Laura Bruckman for materials science and engineering.

In short, the Case Western Reserve-led project seeks to use computers to improve and analyze data from various nearby photovoltaic systems in order to measure their short and long-term performance.

These machine learning methods are used to solve the quality of data problems that affect any factory. The researchers will use a “spatio-temporal graph model of a neural network”.

Team member Mehmet Koyutürk, professor of computer science: “Because we don’t have a robot that inspects all the photovoltaic systems that test their information for similar patterns between their behaviors, but uses all the data collected to act as we did.”

“In your region, different companies have data on their technology,” said Mehmet Koyutürk, “but we haven’t had the opportunity to collect and analyze data from different companies and regions.”

Funding for projects that “improve the affordability, reliability and value of solar technology in the national grid and address emerging challenges in solar energy” has been established in the Solar Energy Development Office for the 2020 fiscal year (SETO 2020).

It finances projects from early-stage photovoltaics to solar thermal, underlines the convergence of different technologies and lowers the cost of building solar power systems.
