RE2 Robotics Selected by the US Department of Energy to develop a robotic manipulation solution for solar farming

The O-AMPP program enables RE2 to apply its outdoor autonomous robotic technology, which uses cutting-edge computer vision and machine learning techniques, to the solar construction industry. The ability of RE2’s mobile robotic arm will be optimized to aid in the transfer, manipulation and placement of photovoltaic (PV) modules and to improve the process for assembling solar fields.

PITTSBURGH, PA – March 2, 2021 – RE2 Robotics, a leading developer of intelligent mobile robotic manipulation systems, announced that the U.S. Department of Energy (SETO) has received $ 1.9 million in funding to develop a robotic system for the autonomous manipulation of photovoltaic panels outdoors (O-AMPP).

The O-AMPP program enables RE2 to apply its outdoor autonomous robotic technology, which uses cutting-edge computer vision and machine learning techniques, to the solar construction industry. The ability of RE2’s mobile robotic arm will be optimized to aid in the transfer, manipulation and placement of photovoltaic (PV) modules and to improve the process for assembling solar fields.

“RE2 will use its extensive experience and technological foundation in autonomous manipulation to customize and integrate a robotic arm for this program,” said Dr. Amanda Sgroi, Principal Research Scientist. “Our machine learning and artificial intelligence modules, RE2 DetectTM and RE2 IntellectTM, are used to ensure the system is able to autonomously manipulate and place PV modules to build a solar field.”

The Funding Program of the Office for Solar Energy Technologies for Fiscal Year 2020 (SETO 2020) supports projects that improve the affordability, reliability and value of solar technologies in the US grid and address emerging challenges in the solar industry. RE2’s program falls under the theme of Innovations in Manufacturing – Hardware Incubator. These hardware and manufacturing innovations will lower the cost of solar technology, facilitate the safe integration of solar power into the grid, and support a strong US solar manufacturing sector and supply chain.

“Our goal is to provide the solar industry with a new resource to accelerate construction,” said Jorgen Pedersen, President and CEO. “With RE2’s mobile intelligent manipulation technology, we aim to improve work productivity, improve work safety, reduce construction costs, and improve the efficiency and quality of installation by automating processes that are currently done manually. Solar energy can become more accessible to everyone.”

RE2 will partner with several industry leaders including The AES Corporation, Array Technologies, JLG Industries, Mortenson and Pratt Miller to bring robotic construction capabilities to the solar industry.
