Max Humphrey designed this multifunctional courtyard for a house in Denver

Emily Minton Redfield

When building a house in a location with more than 300 days of sunshine per year, it is important to make the most of nature. Portland-based designer Max Humphrey was commissioned with the huge covered area and approached it like a large interior space dividing this huge space into zones with different purposes.

An outdoor “living room” with plenty of seating is a great place for fireplace chats. A deep pair of swinging daybeds is a dream haven for afternoon reading. A ping pong table near the dining area ensures that you can burn calories during an Olympic-level matchup and then refuel directly from the grill.
