Massive hailstorm damages crops, house roofs in Rautahat

RAUTAHAT: A massive hailstorm today severely damaged crops and tile roofs of more than 200 houses in around a number of villages in Rautahat.

Most of the hailstones, the size of lawn tennis balls, weighing about 500 grams, hit the villages of the parishes – Madhav Narayan, Devahi Gonahi, Gadhimai, Gajura, Rajdevi and Garuda – including the rural community of Durga Bhagawati since 8:00 a.m. 35 minutes long on Friday morning.

The people of the central region of Rautahat have suffered tremendous damage from the hailstorm that struck the region at a time when locals were beginning to recover from deteriorating conditions caused by the devastating flood in the last monsoon were.

The hailstones completely damaged crops such as wheat, red gram, mangoes and vegetables, according to Raj Naraya Yadav, head of the district agricultural development agency. The hailstorm damaged crops worth millions of rupees, he said.

It would take a few days to determine the loss caused by the disaster, said the Rautahat district police office.
