There is so much about finding a home and buying it. It’s a place to live, yes, so of course there are practical concerns that need to be considered – making sure the foundations are stable, that there are enough bedrooms, that commuting to work is reasonable. For these reasons, people have been staying in their homes for years – only now are they staying any longer.

In 2019, the average U.S. homeowner had lived in their home for 13 years, compared to just eight years in 2010. And in the past year, people have obviously spent more time in their homes than ever before due to pandemic shutdowns and travel restrictions. The result is an increased desire to remodel homes and invest in repairs for the benefit of the owner, rather than for the express purpose of improving resale value – although it is.

The pandemic aside, there are many reasons people stay in their homes for long periods of time – attachment to their neighborhood is just one of them.
