There is so much about finding a home and buying it. It’s a place to live, yes, so of course there are practical concerns that need to be considered – making sure the foundations are stable, that there are enough bedrooms, that commuting to work is reasonable. But it’s also about deciding where to put down roots and form a community: the local parks that people love, the neighbors they connect with, the coffee shops they depend on. For these reasons, people have been staying in their homes for years – only now are they staying any longer.
In 2019, the average U.S. homeowner had lived in their home for 13 years, compared to just eight years in 2010. And in the past year, people have obviously spent more time in their homes than ever before due to pandemic shutdowns and travel restrictions. The result is an increased desire to remodel homes and invest in repairs for the benefit of the owner, rather than for the express purpose of improving resale value – although it is.
The pandemic aside, there are many reasons people stay in their homes for long periods of time – attachment to their neighborhood is just one of them. Older adults opting not to downsize, as well as tax incentives, are some others. While the ubiquity of information on the internet has made it possible for people to feel empowered to do repairs at home themselves, 63 percent of self-implemented projects fail. According to Matthew Mack, senior sales manager at home service company Long Roofing, hiring an expert really makes a difference as professionals are able to handle all of the unforeseen scenarios that arise in home improvement projects, let alone the efficiency of what they work. “They’ll do it two or three times as fast as someone who doesn’t [do] every day, ”he said.
Boyce said most of their customers agree. “I would say in my experience there is almost no one who thinks they will do the job themselves,” she said. “They don’t know how, and it takes a lot of time, and they just budget it from the start.”
Davy Meister, a retired English teacher and homeowner in Culpeper, Virginia, noticed several years ago that the roof of his ranch-style home was in need of repair. After every heavy thunderstorm, there were pieces of roof in the yard, and although he hadn’t noticed any leaks, he wanted to make it first.
