Gridtential Energy received a research project to create sophisticated plug-and-play solar systems. The project will combine lead-based silicon wafer technology with the testing expertise of Electric Applications Incorporated (EAI) to develop high voltage reference batteries.
DURHAM, NC, February 25, 2021 – Engineers from Gridtential Energy, Inc. and Electric Applications Incorporated (EAI), supported by the Consortium for Battery Innovation (CBI), are working to develop a fast and safe plug-and-play process . Solar-powered energy storage systems to meet the booming demand for renewable and safe energy in US households.
Gridtential Energy pioneered Silicon Joule ™, an innovative bipolar battery technology that uses silicon wafers (similar to solar cells) in conventional lead-acid batteries to reduce weight and achieve performance that is competitive with lithium-ion at a lower cost. The new research project will combine silicon joule technology with EAI’s testing expertise to develop high-voltage reference batteries specifically for so-called energy storage applications behind the meter.
Gridtential and EAI are developing advanced batteries that could accelerate the transition to cleaner electricity in US homes.
The advanced batteries developed by Gridtential and EAI could accelerate the transition to cleaner power supplies in households across the country as the new US president drives climate change policies and low-carbon transformation of the economy.
The energy storage behind the meter (BTM) is a crucial part of the decarbonization landscape as the demand for systems is booming. In the USA alone, Wood Mackenzie forecast an installation of 430 MW in 2020, which corresponds to an increase of more than 100% compared to 2019.
This increases the need for affordable, safe and high performance batteries in easy-to-connect packages that contain renewable energy for the housing market.

The research collaboration includes the construction of mini-systems with bipolar silicon joule batteries for testing. EAI is developing an optimized charging scheme for replicating real energy storage systems.
Building on CBI’s technical roadmap goals to maximize lifespan and energy throughput – two key technical parameters for storing renewable energy – this project is critical to providing insights on how to improve lead-acid battery performance.
