Fire at construction site of new Doherty Memorial High School

WORCESTER — Crews are on the scene of a fire at the construction site of the new Doherty Memorial High School.

The school, on Highland Street, next to the current Doherty, is about two years away from completion.

Firefighters said roofing material is on fire, sending thick, dark smoke into the air, visible throughout the city and beyond. The fire is atop metal decking.

At least one person was taken from the scene by ambulance.

Traffic is being detoured from the Highland Street and Park Avenue area.

The fire, reported about 3:30 p.m., was knocked down in about 30 minutes.
