What do Apple, Tesla and prefabricated houses have in common? Apparently a lot if you’re a prefab connect homes maker.

California-based Connect Homes specializes in prefabricated homes. While this is not a new concept, prefabrication is increasingly viewed as a possible solution to our real estate crisis.

Right now, prefabricated houses can be seen across the spectrum, from homes that can accommodate families to shelters for people without a residence. Recently, several prefabricated house manufacturers – including Plant Prefab, Pallet, and Dvele – have increased public interest and sales.

Unlike other modular prefab home manufacturers, Connect Homes builds its devices the same way Apple builds its phones and Tesla builds its vehicles: “By understanding every stakeholder and every part of the journey,” Connect Homes CEO Greg Leung told Insider .

Leung, CEO of Connect Homes for about six months, was previously responsible for the planning and management of the global supply chain at Apple for 12 years. Despite the obvious differences between Apple and Connect Homes, based on his experience with the tech giant – and a previous smart home tech startup – Leung decided to make Connect Homes and the prefab industry a company that produces higher quality homes more often can be done with less time and money.

“Imagine if you approached building a house the way Apple approached building a product … from an end-to-end standpoint,” said Leung. “If you think about it from that point of view, you can optimize and make decisions that will allow it to work seamlessly for the end user and for the end user [the process] to run efficiently and effectively. “

For prefabricated house manufacturers, this design could mean the difference between a niche builder or a “game changer” that could “replace traditional building in many applications,” said Leung.

And for Connect Homes the goal is to become a major national contractor.

“Prefab has been around for decades, with too much promised and too little delivered, as prefab in and of itself is not the answer, but a technique that addresses the problem [of our housing crisis]”Said Leung.

Connect’s growing popularity is undeniable. The company recorded the most bookings in its history in the second quarter of 2020. Now it looks like the first quarter of this year will beat last year’s fourth quarter, and the coming second quarter is already on track to beat this quarter.

Among those orders, there was a strong mix of requests for homes in urban, suburban and rural areas. Regardless of the destination, Connect’s modular units can be delivered to the USA by tractor units, rail vehicles or cargo ships.

All of these homes are assembled on the assembly line at Connect’s California factory. As a result, Connect can build a house every six days while, according to Leung, an entire house can be produced in 24 days. When the units are ready, Connect delivers its houses 90% ready and installs them with a crane for its customers

Compared to traditional homes, Connect’s homes are more efficient – in terms of time, money, waste, and carbon – to build “orders of magnitude,” said Leung. This environmentally friendly corner can also be seen in all houses: The devices from Connect are equipped with insulation, systems geared towards energy efficiency, a roof with high solar reflection and LED lights.

Not all Connect customers are first-time buyers. In some cases, Connect’s customers are urban residents who want to physically replace an existing home with a new home. In other cases, homebuyers are looking for the “city to country” exodus we saw in COVID-19.

The company has also received inquiries from colder travel hotspots like ski resorts, which benefit from Connect’s strong insulation, year-round construction capacity, and shipping of near-complete homes.

While Connect does not build purely customer-specific houses, the existing models can be partially adapted using different surfaces and devices. There are also different packages – one for cold weather and one for smart home technology – to further personalize the space.

The Connect units, which sit on steel frames, look no different from a typical modern house. The company offers 14 models ranging from Connect 1 valued at $ 202,700 (460 square feet) to Connect 10 ($ 997,000).

Connect’s most popular model, the Connect 8, comes closer to the larger model at 2,560 square feet. The two-story Connect 8, with its high living room and entertainment areas, is “the epitome of a family home”. The kitchen also flows into the aft deck, creating an inside-outside feeling.

In total, the nearly $ 814,000 home has three bedrooms and bathrooms. All three sleeping areas are located on the second floor, including the master bedroom with its own bathroom and walk-in closet. There is also a second bathroom and laundry room on the top floor.

Leung said the home’s success came from its “versatile footprint” and its ability to blend into thin but long urban lots.

“It’s not your sprawling taller ranch house that doesn’t always fit into an urban setting, but it’s equally good in the country,” Leung said. “We sell them everywhere.”
