A serious fire breaks out in the roofing business


SAN JOSE – A heavy fire in a roofing shop in downtown San Jose sent a thick cloud of black smoke into the air on Friday morning, according to firefighters and witnesses.

The four-alarm fire was reported at 10:25 a.m. at Statewide Roofing in an industrial area on the 1600 block of South Seventh Street between Phelan and Alma Streets. At 2:30 p.m. the fire was declared under control.

No injuries have been reported, according to the San Jose Fire Department and local witnesses. The residents evacuated the adjacent shops.

PG&E technicians have also been asked to damage power lines. Seventh Street between Phelan and Alma has been closed to allow access for emergency vehicles. The street was still closed from 5 p.m.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
